→ The Static Album
The Static Album is an ongoing project which focuses on my relationship to my Peruvian-American first-generation family, what it means to be "Americanized" in contrast to my family, and the process of creating a role within my family's dynamic via the camera. I am interested in my role as a documentarian and how being remembered through a family photograph creates a legacy for both “the family” as well as an entire generation of immigrant-Americans.
For this project, I look to document scenarios which straddle the line between “love” and “hyper critique” in my family, while simultaneously capturing the tension between subject and maker, immigrant parents to an “American” daughter and barriers that arise. Grappling with the visual markers of labor and exhaustion within my family, it’s clear that their “physical bodies” experience America in ways vastly different from mine. It is through their labor that I have the privilege to document their legacy, whether that legacy is rooted in joy and laughter or carries the weight of sacrifice and hardship.
